The Importance of Fátima in Contemporary Portuguese and Lithuanian Catholic Societies

Fátima, being a location of the Marian apparition officially admitted by the Vatican City, is a significant place for the Catholics in the whole world. Especially because the miracle which is believed to have happened here in the beginning of the 20th century was dedicated to the people living in modern times. In this article I will try to look over some aspects in which the importance of Fátima is visible in contemporary Portuguese society and how it has reached Lithuania as a part of a common Catholic world.
The whole story started in the western part of Portugal in 1917. According to witnesses, that year the Holy Virgin appeared to three shepherds (Lúcia de Jesus dos Santos and her cousins, Francisco and Jacinta Marto, aged 10, 9 and 7) on the 13th day of each month from May to October. During these six apparitions the children were asked to pray for the salvation of the world and were told the so-called “secret of Fátima”, which consisted of three prophetical visions (related with the Hell, the future danger of anti-clerical Soviet Russia and the Second World War, and the suffering Bishop dressed in white, a vision later referred to an attempt to kill Pope John Paul II in 1981). The last apparition was followed by “the Miracle of the Sun” – the sun “dance” which was witnessed by approximately 70,000 people gathered in the field. After that, two million pilgrims visited Fátima in ten years time. In 1930, the Bishop of Leiria-Fátima declared the miracle “worthy of belief”; this official position of the Church was confirmed many times, most strongly among them – by Popes Pius XII, Paul VI, John Paul II and Benedict XVI.
So, first of all, the traditional religious significance has to be mentioned when talking about the importance of Fátima in contemporary Portuguese Catholic society. As a place of divine apparition in the space of everyday life the site was accepted by the local people at once (or at least after the miracle of October, 1917). The first chapel was built and the first pilgrimage journeys started more than a decade before the official admission of the Catholic Church; it only encouraged the process later on. Nowadays more than 4 million people visit the site every year, most of them come from May to October. Of course, not all of them are Portuguese – international religious tourism shows the importance of the sanctuary to the whole Catholic community (and non-Catholics, trying to know this culture better). So do numerous religious organisations (Rosary communities, the Blue Army of Our Lady, the Movement of Message of Fátima, etc.), working both locally and internationally in order to spread the message of Fátima apparitions. This significance to the Catholic Church is well-known by the Portuguese themselves. Despite the agreement with the Salazar’s dictatorship, later the Church tried to remain in a politically neutral position, which did not hinder a proud of having an important object in one’s home country to grow up. That is why, according to Paul Christopher Manuel, Fátima has become a part of Portuguese national identity – a symbol they can be proud of and tell the others about, as well as, for example, the national football team. Finally, understanding Fátima as one of the symbols of Portugal leads to its representation as an object of cultural tourism. So the economical importance for the local people should not be forgotten, especially when the sanctuary attracts millions of pilgrims to the town, having about 9,000 inhabitants. This situation converted a small village into a prosperous city of religious tourism – the first one developed this way in the Portuguese context.
The importance of Fátima in Lithuania could be referred to the whole Catholic community and defined as vivifying the faith in a secularized society of the 20th century. In the case of Lithuania, devotion was stimulated because of having historically close connections with Russia, a country which was extremely important in the message of Fátima apparitions. Their significance is clearly visible in the number of Our Lady of Fátima statues in Lithuanian Catholic churches, for example, in Žvėrynas, Vilnius, or Šiluva. During the USSR occupation period, the message of Fátima became important in an even more specific way. It gave an opportunity to communicate directly with the Catholics from a non-communist part of the world through organising journeys of Fátima Pilgrim Statue. The influence of these events still has remained in the order of public prayer in Šiluva sanctuary, where “the Day of Mary” is announced on the 13th day of each month. Moreover, the devotion to the Holy Virgin was extremely intensified here shortly after the apparitions in Portugal. Šiluva, a small town in the western part of Lithuania, is considered to be a place of the first known Marian apparition in Europe (in 1608) officially admitted by the Holy See. In addition to similar forms of both miracles (first appearance to shepherds, later evidence to bigger audiences, and influence to the political situation), some similarities can be seen in the regulation of the towns’ infrastructure nowadays. So it is possible to say that in today’s Catholic society Fátima has become a good example of coordinating contemporary tourism interests with religious devotion in one site of international pilgrimage.

Fátimos reikšmė šiuolaikinėse Portugalijos ir Lietuvos katalikų visuomenėse

Fátima, būdama Vatikano oficialiai pripažinto Švč. Mergelės Marijos apsireiškimo vieta, yra itin svarbi katalikams visame pasaulyje. Ypač dėl to, jog stebuklas, tikima, čia įvykęs XX a. pradžioje, buvo skirtas žmonėms, gyvenantiems moderniaisiais laikais.
Be to, pamaldumas Švč. Mergelei Marijai čia ypač sustiprėjo tuoj po apsireiškimų Portugalijoje. Šiluva, mažas miestelis vakarinėje Lietuvos dalyje, manoma, yra pirmojo žinomo ir oficialiai Šventojo Sosto pripažinto Švč. Mergelės Marijos apsireiškimo Europoje (1608 m.) vieta. Panašios ne tik abiejų stebuklų formos (pirmas pasirodymas piemenėliams, vėlesni įrodymai didesnėms liudytojų auditorijoms ir įtaka politinei krašto situacijai) – panašumų galima pastebėti ir dabartiniame miestelių infrastruktūros tvarkyme. Todėl galima sakyti, jog šių dienų katalikiškoje visuomenėje Fátima tapo geru pavyzdžiu stengiantis suderinti šiuolaikinius turistinius interesus su religiniu pamaldumu vienoje tarptautinės piligrimystės vietoje.
