Fátima

''Nossa Senhora do Rosario de Fatima'' (Our Lady of the Rosary of Fatima)

Fatima is a town, located in west central Portugal. The town itself has a population of 7,756 habitants and is not very big, nor industrial. Actually, in the past it was just a small rural village whose main product was olive oil. Nowadays Fatima's economy relies on religious tourism.

The small town of Fatima is one of the most visited Marian shrines, which welcomes millions of pilgrims and tourists from all over the world, particularly on the pilgrimage days in May and October. The interesting and unique fact about this town is, that unlike many of Europe's great Marian pilgrimage sites, the sanctity of Fatima dates not from the Middle Ages but only from early in the 20th century.

The legend of the town

The Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of God, appeared six times to the three shepherd children Lucia Santos and her cousins Jacinta and Francisco Marto near the town of Fatima, Portugal between May 13 and October 17, 1917. Appearing to the children, the Blessed Virgin told them that She had been sent by God with a message. She promised that Heaven would grant peace to all the world if Her requests for prayer, reparation and consecration were heard and obeyed.

The biggest event of Fatima, which drew 70,000 people from all parts of Europe occurred on the October 17. It was a rainy day. The apparition announced to the children that she was in fact Mary, the Mother of Christ. She asked that prayers be said for the end of World War I and that a church be built in her honor. She then vanished in a blazing light as Lucia cried out, "Look at the Sun" which, however, was hidden behind dark clouds. Many thousands of those gathered reported seeing a movement in the heavens as if the sun was whirling toward the earth and away again. Others reported feeling the ground shake powerfully beneath their feet. Mysteriously, after the spinning of the great body of light, the crowd found its clothing completely dry and the rains stopped.

Today, lots of believers or simply curious people are willing to see this sacred land. For those, this town has a considerable number of shops and stalls selling all kinds of religious articles, and the streets of the town have plenty of hotels, hostels and restaurants.

In conclusion, the great fame of Fatima, with more than two million pilgrims arriving a year, is not, however, due to the dogma and support of the dictatorial church by rather due to the place that Fatima holds in the hearts and minds of the common people of Portugal, Spain, France and other countries.

Fatima
